Syracuse, N.Y. — Some of them take to the water quickly. Others need several swim lessons to feel comfortable in the above-ground pool at the Syracuse zoo.
Six penguin chicks have spent recent weeks learning to safely hop in and out of the pool, swim from side to side, and even hold their breath under water.
"They have to learn to hold their breath under water, just like we do," said penguin keeper Deborah DeLorenzo.
Luis, one of the six Humboldt penguins hatched this winter and spring in Syracuse, learned to dive on just his second lesson. He and Elmer appear to be a good match in the pool, happily splashing around and bobbing in the water.
The chicks will continue fine-tuning their swimming skills and adapting to their new environment - as they learn things like how to accept fish by hand and hop on a scale - before being released to the penguin colony later this summer.
